«Chicago Boys»: En la íntimidad con los creadores de «El ladrillo»

“Chicago Boys” es un largometraje del año 2015 centrado en los estudiantes chilenos de intercambio en la Universidad de Chicago, quienes posteriormente se convirtieron en los artífices del texto conocido como “El Ladrillo”; una pieza fundamental para comprender el sistema neoliberal y sus implicancias en Chile y Latinoamérica.

El documental está segmentado en capítulos, lo que le otorga dinamismo y espacio para explorar los tópicos históricos y personales. En uno de estos capítulos, por ejemplo, se aborda la creación de “El Ladrillo”, que vendría a ser la base de la política económica instaurada por el régimen de Pinochet. Antes había sido propuesto por los Chicago Boys al Presidente Alessandri, pero fue recién después del golpe que vio la luz.

La dictadura había llegado con un modelo económico elaborado por profesionales educados por el pensamiento de Milton Friedman y que además ocuparon cargos públicos del régimen militar, como el ministro de Economía y posteriormente Hacienda, Sergio Castro, y el ministro de Salud, Carlos Massad.

Este modelo de carácter neo-liberal fue visto como la salida al plan económico socialista de Allende. “El ladrillo” proponía la apertura de los mercados, el fomento del capitalismo y la reducción del gasto público.

Ver este documental te hace cómplice de la historia, además de retratar íntimamente la vida universitaria de Los Chicago Boys en los Estados Unidos, donde abundaba el alcohol y las fiestas privadas, en un grupo que ellos mismos denominaron como “la mafia”.

Desde una postura cercana, la película ayuda a entender el modelo económico que hoy tenemos en Chile, un modelo que después de 7 gobiernos y de años de transición, no olvidar, desencadenó en el estallido social del 18 de octubre.

Es por esto mismo, que la invitación es a ver esta película con una mirada crítica, para no quedarse solo con las palabras de sus protagonistas, Los Chicago Boys. De hecho, el único contrapeso a ellos es el Premio Nacional de Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales del 2006, Ricardo Ffrench-Davis, quien es conocido por ser un economista que cuestiona el sistema neoliberal.

Así, a ratos en la cinta se echa de menos una posición ideológica más clara y una mayor visión del pensamiento de sus autores. En sus 96 minutos de duración, Chicago Boys nos muestra de cerca a Sergio de Castro, Ernesto Fontaine, Rolf Lüders y Carlos Massad, permitiendo que estos se expongan de una forma en donde no queda totalmente clara su responsabilidad política.
