“La casa infernal”: Recomendación para un Halloween en casa

Se acerca Halloween y hay que pasarlo en casa, convirtiéndose así la mejor instancia para dedicarle una lectura a un libro de terror y Cultura21 tiene un título para perfecto para la ocasión: “La casa infernal” (1971) de Richard Matheson. Se trata de una novela reeditada recientemente por Editorial Planeta a través de su sello Minotauro que viene a revivir una historia de corte clásico de casas embrujadas creada por el escritor de “Soy leyenda” y también autor de los mejores capítulos de la antigua serie “La dimensión desconocida”.

El título, ambientado en el año 1940, cuenta la historia de una expedición de cuatro personas en la Casa Belasco, la cual es conocida como la casa más embrujada del mundo. La razón de esta suicida incursión, es que el millonario Randolph Deutsch está en su lecho de muerte y quiere saber si hay vida después de la muerte. Para ello contrata a cuatro extraños: el Doctor Lionel Barrett, un físico interesado en la parapsicología, pero escéptico a lo paranormal; su esposa Edith, quien dentro de la casa descubrirá secretos sobre su sexualidad; Benjamin Franklin Fischer, el único sobreviviente de una incursión anterior a la casa; y Florence Tanner, espiritualista y médium mental, quien cree fervientemente en lo paranormal.

La publicación continúa con el tópico de “la soledad” que Matheson desarrolló en su narrativa anteriormente. Este tópico lo abordó igualmente en “Soy leyenda”, obra debut del autor, que narra explícitamente la soledad de un hombre ante los vampiros que son la especie dominante. Este tópico también está presente de manera clara en su otro libro, “El hombre menguante”, el cual narra las circunstancias de un hombre que se va volviendo cada vez más pequeño y con ello su existencia y su entorno van desapareciendo.

En el caso de “La casa infernal”, la exploración de la soledad se va dando una manera particular, ya que el hecho de que cuatro personas estén encerradas en una casa podría parecer todo lo contrario a la soledad, pero el autor acá propone este tópico de una forma muy original. Para ello se vale de la exploración psicológica de cada personaje para ver cómo experimenta su soledad interna. Cuestión que podemos ver en el choque de un escéptico de lo paranormal contra una médium, la distancia marital, los secretos de cada personaje, que se dan en el espacio hermético de una casa encantada.

Por otro lado, la ambientación de terror es magistral, no por nada Stephen King nombró a esta novela como, “La más aterradora de las novelas sobre casas encantadas jamás escrita”. Esto queda patente en el trasfondo desarrollado de la Casa Belasco, que puede entenderse como un miedo a los terrores de los vicios y las comunidades de la época hippie. Para entender este miedo se debe tener presente que la novela se publicó en el año 1971 y en 1969, Charles Manson envió a sus súbditos a realizar el horrible asesinato múltiple en la casa de Roman Polanski. Aquel hecho, en la cultura norteamericana, caló profundamente: significó el fin de la era hippie, ya que el consumo de LSD, las enfermedades venéreas en las comunidades y el control mental por parte de este gurú, nada tenían que ver con el amor y la paz, sino que demostraba que estos espacios propiciaban la creación de monstruos humanos como Manson.

Sumado a esto, la investigación sobre lo paranormal para realizar la novela y las distintas posturas ante esto, son contundentes y muy bien aplicadas. No solo es una novela de terror, ya que, además –y como ya lo había hecho Shirley Jackson en la “La maldición de Hill House”–, es un informativo bastante completo y muy verisímil sobre el estudio de lo paranormal.
