The Lighthouse: Un relato inquietante sobre poder, locura y soledad

La nueva película de Robert Eggers irrumpe en el congestionado cine de terror con una propuesta arriesgada, pero efectiva. Un viaje hacia la locura con impecables interpretaciones y una creación de horrorosas imágenes y misteriosos ambientes que tienen como resultado un thriller psicológico con tintes lovecraftianos que a ratos parece salido de otra época.

Si la ópera prima de Robert Eggers “The Witch” (2015) hacía presagiar su enorme potencial, “The Lighthouse” es la confirmación de que el cineasta de 36 años aprende a pasos agigantados como crear historias inquietantes y sorprendentemente frescas. “The Lighthouse” (El Faro) retrata la relación de dos hombres, interpretados por Willem Dafoe y Robert Pattinson, que deben servir como guardianes de un faro durante cuatro semanas, tiempo en que la lucha de poder, la locura y el terror psicológico deforman la normalidad para dar paso a un relato que llena de cuestionamientos al espectador y a sus protagonistas, poniéndolos muchas veces en el mismo nivel.

El sonido del mar inunda la cabaña donde Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson) y Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe) intercambian miradas llenas de locura y desesperación. El estruendo del faro rompe la tensión de inmediato, para dar paso a un brillante monólogo, influenciado por el alcohol y la soledad, que saca a relucir lo mejor de ambos actores. Esto es “The Lighthouse” y aunque puede no ser atractivo que una película se desarrolle solo entre dos personajes, la mano maestra de Eggers hace atrapante cada uno de los 110 minutos que dura la cinta.

Grabada en blanco y negro, y en una relación de aspecto de 16:19, la producción demuestra desde sus primeras tomas una cinematografía que evoca soledad y una incómoda calma. Acompañada de una brillante banda sonora compuesta por Mark Korven, la cámara recorre muy de cerca la cara de los protagonistas de esta retorcida historia, guardando así un fiel registro de su descenso hacia la locura.

Tanto Willem Dafoe como Robert Pattinson deslumbran con actuaciones viscerales, sin embargo, es Pattinson quien sorprende más, desarrollando un personaje que evoluciona de manera drástica durante los sucesos de la película. Dafoe no defrauda y aporta con un personaje más estático argumentalmente, pero no por ello menos críptico e interesante.

Eggers deleita con un manejo exquisito de atmósfera e imágenes surrealistas que se funden a menudo con la estresante realidad de los dos guardianes del faro. Elementos como las gaviotas, el faro, el alcohol y el mismo mar se convierten en motores de tensión y misterio para los protagonistas confundidos. ¿Hay una extraña presencia en el faro de aquella isla desolada o son todas ilusiones de dos hombres solitarios envueltos en la locura?

“The Lighthouse” es toda una rareza en esta época, cuando el terror parece recurrir demasiado a viejas fórmulas para asustar solo superficialmente. La historia de Robert Eggers se despoja del clásico jumpscare para hacer lo que casi nadie hace en la actualidad: abrazar el terror real, psicológico y profundo, que logra implantarse en el pensamiento para incomodar sin tregua, con tópicos como la sexualidad, la soledad y el poder. Una joya del terror psicológico que vale la pena ver y re visitar y que, además, perfila a su director como una de las mayores promesas del cine de terror.
